What is the difference between a Life Jacket (PFD) and a Buoyancy Aid?

2026-07-02
This is a common distinction for retailers and consumers: Life Jacket (PFD)—Designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water, with higher buoyancy (usually 150N+). Provides maximum safety for boating, sailing, and offshore activities. Typically bulkier and less flexible. Required by law for certain activities. Buoyancy Aid—Provides flotation support but may not turn an unconscious person face-up. Lower buoyancy (usually 50N-100N). Designed for paddlers, swimmers, and active water sports where freedom of movement is prioritized. Ideal for SUP, kayaking, canoeing, and snorkeling. Both meet different safety standards and suit different activities. We offer both types with full customization—please let us know your target use case.
